A Route That Keeps Getting Harder — But Still Works for the Right Profile
The UK Skilled Worker visa has faced its most significant tightening since 2016. In 2025, applications fell approximately 41% and visas issued dropped 44% — driven by higher salary thresholds, a stricter skill level bar, and a raised English requirement. For those who do qualify, the route remains viable, but understanding exactly where the lines are drawn is now more important than ever.
Salary Thresholds (Updated July 2025)
The general salary threshold rose again in July 2025:
| Route | Minimum Salary (from July 2025) |
|---|---|
| General Skilled Worker | £41,700/yr |
| New entrant rate (under 26 / recent graduate / switching from student) | £33,400/yr |
| STEM PhD holders | £33,400/yr |
| Non-STEM PhD holders | £37,500/yr |
| Health & Care Worker | Separate NHS/going rate applies |
| Shortage occupation list | Abolished — standard rate applies |
Going Rate Salaries for Common Roles
Your salary must meet whichever is higher — the general threshold or the "going rate" for your specific SOC code published by the Home Office. Examples from the 2025 going rates list:
| Role | Going Rate (2025) |
|---|---|
| Software developer | £54,700 |
| Business analyst | £50,200 |
| Civil / structural engineer | £40,880 |
| Accountant | £37,900 |
| Nurse (NHS-sponsored) | NHS Band 5/6 pay scale applies |
A software developer, for example, needs £54,700 — not just the general £41,700 threshold. Always check the going rate for your specific SOC code before applying.
Skill Level Now Requires Graduate-Level Roles
Effective 22 July 2025, the minimum skill level was raised to RQF Level 6 (graduate level), removing 111 Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) codes from the eligible list. This eliminates many mid-skill occupations that previously qualified under Level 3. If your role is below graduate level, it no longer qualifies for this visa.
English Requirement Raised to B2
From 8 January 2026, the English language requirement was raised from B1 to B2 (upper-intermediate level). For IELTS, this typically means a score of at least 5.5–6.0 in each component. This affects applicants who previously held B1 approval and are extending, renewing, or newly applying.
ILR Now Takes 10 Years
One of the most significant changes: Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) — the UK's equivalent of permanent residence — now requires 10 years of continuous lawful residence for most Skilled Worker applicants, up from 5 years. This doubles the settlement timeline and is a major factor to weigh against alternatives like Ireland (5 years to citizenship) or Canada (3 years to PR).
Important: New Payroll Compliance Rule (From April 2026)
From 8 April 2026, salary compliance is assessed per pay period rather than on an annual contract basis. If your employer pays you late or your payslip shows a shortfall in any pay period, it can be treated as a compliance breach — even if your annual contract meets the threshold. If you're already in the UK on a Skilled Worker visa, ensure your employer's payroll is consistent.
Who Is Least Affected: Healthcare Workers
The Health and Care Worker visa still uses NHS pay scales, which are lower than the general threshold. Nurses, allied health professionals, and doctors sponsored by the NHS remain largely unaffected and the UK healthcare route remains one of the most accessible pathways.
Important: Overseas workers in adult social care (non-NHS) still cannot bring dependants.
What You Need to Qualify
To get a UK Skilled Worker visa, you need 70 mandatory points:
| Criterion | Points |
|---|---|
| Job offer from licensed sponsor | 20 |
| Job at RQF Level 6+ (graduate-level skill) | 20 |
| Salary meets threshold or going rate | 20 |
| English language at B2 level | 10 |
You must score all 70 — there's no flexibility on the mandatory points.
Finding a Licensed Sponsor
Your employer must be on the Register of Licensed Sponsors (publicly searchable on the UK Home Office website). There are over 100,000 licensed sponsors. Practical approach: - Search the sponsor register for employers in your field - Target your job search to those specific employers - LinkedIn is very effective for connecting with UK recruiters
Is the UK Still Realistic for You?
Yes, if: - You're in healthcare (NHS), IT, engineering, or finance at graduate level - You have a relevant degree and 3+ years experience - Your expected UK salary clears £41,700 (or applicable lower threshold) - You're comfortable with a 10-year path to settlement
It becomes harder if: - Your role is below RQF Level 6 - You're in the care sector with family plans - You're comparing it to Ireland's 5-year citizenship or Canada's 3-year PR path
- Salary below £41,700? Negotiate before applying, or target roles at the STEM PhD rate (£33,400) or new entrant rate (£33,400) if you qualify.
- Role below RQF Level 6? The skill level was raised from RQF 3 to RQF 6 in 2025. Check the official occupation codes list — some roles you wouldn't expect are still RQF 6.
- English below B2? You need IELTS 5.5–6.0 in each component (B2 equivalent). An IELTS preparation course of 4–6 weeks is usually sufficient.
- In healthcare? The Health and Care Worker visa uses NHS pay scales — you may qualify even if the general threshold seems out of reach.
