Why the Netherlands?
The Netherlands is one of Europe's most accessible destinations for skilled professionals — particularly in technology, finance, and engineering. Amsterdam hosts major European headquarters for companies like ASML, Booking.com, TomTom, Adyen, and Heineken, with a highly international hiring culture.
The Highly Skilled Migrant (HSM) permit — known in Dutch as the Kennismigrant visa — is designed for professionals recruited by Dutch employers. It's employer-sponsored, fast (often approved in under 2 weeks via the IND), and leads directly to a clear residency pathway.
2026 Salary Thresholds (Updated January 2026)
The Dutch government updates HSM salary thresholds annually in January. The 2026 thresholds represent an approximately 4.5% increase from 2025:
| Category | Monthly Gross Salary (2026) |
|---|---|
| Applicants aged 30 and older | €5,942/month |
| Applicants under 30 | €4,357/month |
| Reduced rate (graduates within 3 years + orientation year holders) | €3,122/month |
Important: If your salary qualified in 2025, it may no longer qualify in 2026 — verify against the current thresholds before applying.
These are gross monthly figures. Annual equivalents: - 30+: ~€71,300/year gross - Under 30: ~€52,300/year gross
How the Permit Works
The HSM permit is employer-sponsored — you need a job offer from a recognised sponsor (IND-registered employer). There are over 8,000 recognised sponsors in the Netherlands, including most major corporations.
What the employer does: Files the application on your behalf with the IND (Dutch immigration authority). Recognised sponsors have a streamlined 2-week processing track.
What you do: Once the permit is approved, apply for your entry visa (MVV) at the Dutch consulate if required (Nigerian passport holders need an MVV).
Processing Time
- IND approval (via recognised sponsor): typically 2 weeks
- MVV (entry visa) at Dutch consulate: 4–8 weeks
- Total from job offer to arrival: 6–10 weeks
This is significantly faster than UK (4–8 weeks just for the work permit), Canada (6+ months for PR), or Germany (3–6 months).
The Path to Permanent Residency and Citizenship
| Stage | Timeline |
|---|---|
| HSM Permit (1–5 years, tied to employer) | Year 0 |
| Change employer (update permit, not restart) | Anytime |
| Permanent Residence (Permanent Verblijf) | After 5 years continuous legal residence |
| Dutch Citizenship | After 5 years (dual citizenship possible in some cases) |
The Netherlands is one of the few EU countries where you can naturalise while retaining Nigerian citizenship under certain conditions — worth verifying with an immigration lawyer.
Tax Advantage: The 30% Ruling
Highly skilled migrants who qualify may be eligible for the 30% tax ruling — a significant benefit where 30% of your gross salary is tax-free for up to 5 years (reduced to 10 years total under reformed rules from 2024). This substantially increases your net take-home pay during the initial years.
To qualify: you must be recruited from outside the Netherlands, earn above a salary threshold (€46,107 in 2026), and have specific expertise not readily available in the Dutch market.
Finding a Dutch Employer
What works: - LinkedIn has a very active Dutch recruiter community; English-language profiles are standard in Amsterdam tech - Direct applications to ASML, Booking.com, Adyen, TomTom, ING, ABN AMRO, and similar firms - Dutch tech recruitment agencies: YER, TriFinance, Brunel, IT recruiters in Amsterdam - Glassdoor and Indeed Netherlands for current openings
Most Amsterdam tech firms conduct interviews entirely in English and expect international applications.
Is the Netherlands Right for You?
The Netherlands is a strong option if: - You're in tech, finance, or engineering at mid-to-senior level - Your expected Dutch salary meets the 2026 threshold (€4,357–€5,942/month gross) - You're willing to relocate to an employer that is IND-recognised - You want one of the fastest EU work permit processing times available
- Salary below threshold? For applicants under 30: €4,357/month; 30 and over: €5,942/month. If your offer is close, negotiate — Dutch employers expect it, and a small salary adjustment is far simpler than changing countries.
- No IND-recognised sponsor? There are over 8,000 recognised sponsors in the Netherlands. Search the IND public sponsor register. If your target employer isn't recognised, they can apply for recognition — large companies do this routinely for international hires.
- Need to build relevant experience? The Netherlands is most accessible at mid-senior level (5+ years). Use the intervening time to build specialisations that command Dutch market salaries — cloud certifications, financial qualifications, engineering chartered status.
