Emigrate to the UK as a Software Engineer
The UK Skilled Worker visa has made it significantly easier for software engineers outside the EU to work in the UK, with a relatively fast processing timeline (2–8 weeks) and no English language test required for most Commonwealth applicants. The UK tech sector — particularly London, Manchester, and Edinburgh — actively hires globally, with sponsoring employers numbering in the thousands.

Skilled Worker Visa
The primary route. You need a job offer from a licensed sponsor, a role on the eligible occupations list (SOC codes 2135/2136 cover most software roles), and a salary at or above the going rate (typically £26,200 minimum, £38,700 for most tech roles). No points test — a job offer is sufficient. Processing: 3–8 weeks.
Global Talent Visa
For senior engineers, open-source contributors, or those with demonstrable industry recognition. Requires endorsement from Tech Nation (or equivalent body). No job offer needed — you can work for any employer or freelance. Processing: 3–8 weeks once endorsed.
High Potential Individual (HPI) Visa
If you hold a degree from a top-50 global university (QS ranking), you qualify without a job offer. Valid for 2 years (3 years for PhDs). Allows switching to Skilled Worker once employed.
