Emigrate to Canada as a Nurse

Canada has one of the highest sustained demands for registered nurses of any destination country, driven by an ageing population and a federal recruitment push under the Express Entry and Provincial Nominee programmes. African-trained nurses — particularly from Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, and South Africa — are actively sought, provided credentials are assessed by the NNAS (National Nursing Assessment Service) before an application is filed.

Typical Salary
CAD $70,000 – $105,000 per year (registered nurse, varies by province)
Processing Time
6–14 months depending on route and province
Primary Route
Express Entry — Federal Skilled Worker

Visa routes available

Express Entry — Federal Skilled Worker
The most direct route for nurses with foreign credentials. You need an NNAS assessment, provincial registration (or a job offer), CLB 7 English proficiency (IELTS or CELPIP), and typically 1–2 years of recent skilled work experience. Processing time: 6–8 months after ITA.
Provincial Nominee Programme (PNP)
Many provinces — Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta — run healthcare streams that prioritise nurses. A provincial nomination adds 600 CRS points to an Express Entry profile, making it near-certain. Some streams allow nomination without a prior job offer.
Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot
Smaller communities with acute healthcare shortages offer a fast-track pathway. A job offer from a designated community employer is required, but CRS score is not the deciding factor — community fit is.
